Francesca "Kia" Foster grew up seeing her mother, Stefanie Foster, and her family horribly addicted to drugs in the 1980's in the South Bronx.
While living in a very unstable and chaotic home with her mother, uncle, her mother's off and on again girlfriend, her cousins, her great-grandmother, and her crazy Aunt Callie, Robbie tries hard to shelter his niece. But he is not successful.
However, when the little girl meets a teacher, Lena Adams, at the Recreation Center when she is just seven years old, the woman soon fosters Francesca as the young girl watches her uncle die of AIDS and her mother fall deeper into addiction along with the rest of her family.
Being 15 now and a jr. in high school, Francesca wonders about her future and if she can truly break the cycle of addiction with a dream her mother once had. To become an artist.
But is Stef the only one that can help her achieve that dream? Is she now clean and willing to have a relationship with her daughter? Or will Francesca succumb to the streets just like her family? And, is Lena's love enough to help heal the girl's pain?
We will truly see.
