As a girl named Lucifer moves to Cincinnati, Ohio; she is forced to overcome incredulous obstacles and people who underestimate her wit. She's tired all the time, drinking up to 12 cups of cofffee a day, and as if her boss can't disrespect her more, young 19-going-on-20 year old Lucifer struggles to keep her calm, and her job in this story of friendship, heartbreaks, dates, affairs between co-workers, birthdays, and animation.

Universal Future centers on Mel, who is a cyborg and who works in a coffee shop, and Aron Riley-Brown, who is an optimistic human who worked at a hover-truck delivery service. But after he gets fired from the job, he stumbles into Mel, and ends up hovering about her coffee shop. They form an unlikely relationship, and Mel thinks she can just about keep him.

In a world controlled by mysterious people called the Covine, life is tough for the people in Ash's community. After a suspicious girl named Iz revolts against the Covine when Ash happens to be in line for a train departure, she grabs his hand and they escape. Not knowing what to expect, Ash has no choice but to follow her on a journey to get away from the Covine and to have a better life. Iz may be tenatious, and dangerous at times, but Ash has no other option, and Iz happens to know the route through the old canals, so Ash doesn't have a choice but to tag along.
