Amelia has been through a divorce, which results in having full custody of her three children, Emma, Joey, and Izzy. She relocates her family to Seattle after the messy divorce to be closer to her brother Derek, and his with Meredith along with their three kids, Zola, Bailey, and Ellis. Amelia is in this on and off, complicated, relationship with her best friend Mark Sloan. They've been on and off and on and off for years, it's hard to even keep track. Owen, on the other hand, just got out of a toxic marriage with Cristina Yang because she accused him of being in love with Amelia Shepherd, which she wasn't wrong. Owen did love Amelia- well maybe love isn't the right word, but he thought she was insanely pretty. Owen wanted a good relationship, and he wanted to be with Amelia, but she was with someone else. At the same time Amelia becomes tired with the complicated on and off relationship with Mark Sloan, so maybe she'll try something new?

Both Amelia and Owen attend one of Seattle's biggest high schools. Amelia is a sophomore, and Owen is a junior. When they start taking some of the same classes, they easily fall in love with one another.

Owen went off to college to become a trauma surgeon and went and served in the military for 3 years. Amelia went off to Harvard Medical and is in her second year of her residency for neuroscience. Owen was honorably discharged from the military so now he wants to work at GreySloan with Amelia, Derek, and Meredith. Where this story picks up is where Owen will be starting as an intern at GreySloan.
