Theresa "Reese" McKinney is a seventeen-year-old girl, just doing her best to survive high school, but when her country breaks out in full-fledged war, she has to learn how to survive something a whole lot bigger. With the knowledge of a missile headed straight for their Missouri town, her parents send her to a camp for children and teens, meant to protect them. There, she struggles to get along with the other kids, but that becomes the least of her problems when a soldier stumbles onto their campus, injured, and she claims he's her brother to prevent his certain death. A boy from a small city in Arizona finds himself on the streets of Portland, Oregon, homeless and friendless aside from the oversized Great Dane that follows him around, affectionately named "Soldier." It's clear he's running from something, but when he meets up with a girl who may have a past as shady as his, she takes him in, regardless of whatever it is he's hiding. Will she ever realize she's not who she thinks he is? Or can the past he's trying to desperately to escape be avoided for good?

Two generations have passed since the Kalvunais invaded the humans' frontier, but the question still remains: did they invade, or were they taken? Novalie Gage is on the brink of her eighteenth birthday—and the day that she'll decide her profession. She knows she wants to be a Catcher—a person who dedicates their life to finding and prosecuting offending Kalvunais—but the job is dangerous, the training is hard and her would-be partner, Asher Endicott, is a little too fond of the aliens they're meant to hunt. Asher tells her that the Kalvunais were not hostile in their coming, but were forced to flee to Earth when their own planet was destroyed. He also speaks of legends, myths that Novalie has grown up with but he claims are in fact true. He says there are those among them—the product of inter-species mating between the humans and Kalvunais—that have an unprecedented ability to control the elements. And what's more, he implies, Novalie may be one of them.
