Octavia Sorrell, the Countess of Kendall, had been forced into marriage by her father and brother when she was only fifteen years old. Just after her sixteenth birthday, she gave birth to twins; Charles and Olivia. Two years later, after Lord Kendall's scandalous death, and fearing the gossip it had caused her, she began to live the life of a recluse, only visiting her closest neighbours, Sir Freddie Sommerville and his wife and old school friend, Katie. However, when Charles was ten years old and woefully underprepared for the vigours of an English aristocratic education at Eton, Freddie, who was also her son's guardian persuades her to employ a tutor for her son, to prepare him for school. Captain Alexander Fallbrook, after returning a hero from the battle of Waterloo, was living the life of a libertine. His family, embarrassed by his latest exploits, decided that the best course of action was to send him far away from London. His mother, the Countess of Huntingdon, heard of a position as a tutor for a young lad in Yorkshire, far away from the temptations of town, and she encouraged him to apply for the position. When Alex arrived in Yorkshire, he was somewhat taken by the beautiful young Countess and decided that his time in the country may not be as dull as he first expected. However, as he became better acquainted with the young widow, he recognised a fellow soul in torment. Can Alex overcome four years of guilt, or will he be unable to let go of the past to embrace his future?

"Bitterness is unbecoming of a woman, but I cherish mine like the memory of first love. I see nothing in Leon Wagner, but an automaton. He is a machine of the Third Reich. I am surprised he even bleeds." In the summer of 1945, the world rejoices at the surrender of first Germany then Japan, but healing is a long time coming. Though they are not visible, Ruth Tucker's wounds run deep. Having worked as a nurse for the American Red Cross since the invasion of Normandy, Ruth's hatred for her country's former enemy runs deep. While stationed in Zell am See, Austria, she is assigned to nurse in a German POW camp. She meets a young Wehrmacht soldier, Leon Wagner, who speaks English and strives to spark a friendship with her. But Ruth's bitterness is almost too strong. All she sees in Leon is a heartless machine. Slowly, through a shared love of books and their families, she begins to recognize his humanity and starts to feel her own stir in her heart, something she thought long deadened by the months of violence.

This narrative revolves around Queen Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII of England, whose reign was shrouded in intrigue and speculation. Some portrayed her as a sorceress who enchanted the king, leading him to break from his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and elevate Anne to the throne of England. With Henry's establishment of the Church of England, they were branded as heretics by the Catholic Church, marking a significant shift in England's religious landscape. The Reformation, spurred by Henry's desire for a male heir, severed England's ties with the Catholic Church and its first ruler, Catherine of Aragon. Despite their shared opposition to the Catholic Church's authority, Anne's influence did not guarantee the desired outcome of providing Henry with an heir. Nonetheless, England experienced a period of prosperity during the reign of Elizabeth I, the last Tudor monarch, who governed with resilience and dedication to her country's well-being, even in a male-dominated society. Her reign symbolized unity and progress for England. However, speculation arises about what might have occurred had Anne Boleyn remained Henry's wife and bore him the long-awaited heir, eliminating the need for Henry to marry Jane Seymour. This hypothetical scenario explores the potential outcomes of Anne's continued presence as queen, including her coordination with household representatives and her role in fostering a unified government under Henry's reign.
