This story is set in my version of the MCU, so you will absolutely find references and see cameos from other Marvel characters from stories like "Secret Avengers" and "Spider-Man: Homecoming". You will still be able to enjoy it if you haven't read those books, but I highly recommend reading it as it'll further enhance your reading experience as you will be able to catch stray references and things like that! :)

If you had told Kat Williams or Mason St. James that they would end up being partnered up with eachother on a school assignment, they probably would've laughed in your face. If you had told them they would end up actually liking eachother, they probably would've died. Mason St. James is the son to not one, but two overbearing workaholics. He drives a BMW, has a maid who basically raised him, and he's the most popular guy at John Adams High.
