Vorgeschichte: König Heinrich II lebt nicht mehr. Sein Sohn Richard Löwenherz verlässt England im Jahre 1189, um auf Geheiß des Papstes gegen die Ungläubigen zu kämpfen und Jerusalem zurück zu erobern. Robin OfLocksley, ein Ritter der Leibgarde folgt dem König ins Heilige Land. In Nottingham weht indes ein anderer Wind. Ein neuer Sheriff, William von Wendenal (Sheriff von 1191-1194), hat sich des Amtes bemächtigt. Der alte Sheriff hat für einen jüngeren den Platz räumen müssen, der sich als Tyrann und Menschenschinder erweist. Hunger und Gewalttätigkeit sind keine Fremdwörter zu jener Zeit.Robin ist auf Befehl des Königs auf dem Heimweg vom Kreuzzug. Vieles hat sich verändert. Er ist über die Geschehnisse in seinem Heimatland entsetzt und beschließt dagegen vor zu gehen. So gerät er schon bald in große Schwierigkeiten. Als sein König ihn bittet das große Siegel von England in Verwahrung zu nehmen, kommen kaum zu meisternde Probleme auf ihn zu, die er lösen muss um seinem König zu helfen.
