After The Mind Flayer was defeated, Vecna, a more blood thirsty villain took over the brain of Will. Will struggled to control Vecna's control and managed to do so well through a few months. But as Will's love for Mike became stronger, he was caught at a weak spot where Vecna could take him easy peasy. Only one person can save him now... And that's Mike. Will was less than excited as the prospect of having to leave his few friends and move in with his abusive father but there was nothing he could do.
