When he was a child, he was abused by his parents, until the teachers took notices to his bruises and then they just simply neglected him. However, the abuse still occurred at school. His life was miserable--until he met Nellie. With her help, he began to gain confidence. He was on top of the world, until she had to leave him for a few months when her mother became terminally ill.
