On a cold night, the bonfire's fire lit up the square as the crowd cheered the execution of a man accused of sodomy. The smell of burning wood and flesh filled the air, mixed with the murmur of prayers and shouts of condemnation. Seraphina, wrapped in her cloak, felt the weight of that injustice, but something else caught her attention: on a nearby roof, a black-clad silhouette was watching her. Her heart skipped a beat. When she turned to look better, the figure had vanished.
She quickened her pace home, with a persistent feeling that someone was following her. As she closed the door, she tried to calm down, putting it down to her imagination. But in her room, the unease did not leave her. She sat by the window with a book, seeking refuge in reading. She turned the pages without concentration until a shiver ran down her back.
She looked up and her breath caught. Outside, in the darkness, a pair of amber eyes were watching her. They were not human. They were deep, hypnotic... hungry. Her destiny had just been sealed.
