Emberlyn stepped back by a single millimeter, lips pressed tight. Elijah closed the distance with the glacial composure carried for a millennium, raising a hand to rest against her cheekbone.
"I cannot do this," she said, meeting his eyes to hide the tremor in her hands. "I cannot allow a connection to upend my life. I will not be the reflection of a design I didn't write myself."
Elijah's thumb caressed her cheek, his obsidian gaze stripping away every shield.
"Tell me, Emberlyn, are you truly convinced it is merely the echo of an ancestral bond? Are you so certain this is an enforced tie between soulmates... or are you choosing me willingly?"
She felt her throat tighten, terrified by the absolute freedom with which she wished to prove him right.
