Rusian and Kestrel's parents tried to confront the witch, but ending up dying in the process. So Rusian tried to make Kestrel escape. Once she did, he goes back and tries to confront the witch. They made an agreement that Rusian would sacrifice his life and be cursed and made into a human-like wolf. Rusian ran far away in the woods and survive as long as he can.
