Maria can't explain what she is or what she's done. After all, it shouldn't be possible for a human to conjur fire from nothing but pure will, but that hasn't stopped her before. She can't remember how she ends up bloodied, beaten half to death on a deserted doorstep in the middle of the night, but she can remember him, bringing her in. He's a little reserved but she doesn't mind, especially as they have something in common: neither one is supposed to exist outside of nightmares and folklore. Few people know Maria exists. All of them want her dead. None have felt the wrath of her new friend yet. This is an impossible story and you'd do best pretending you've never heard it.

Acting normal is not the same as being normal. No one knows that truth better than Suthe Montikwe. Born with the unlucky genes of a distant druith ancestor, she's had to hide her talents in order not to be outcast by society. Her strategy is to smile, keep quiet, and work hard. While that method may keep her safe, it's also alienated her from her neighbors and friends, and the worry that she may be discovered is never far from her thoughts. When her country sends out a warrant to capture anyone who practices magic, Suthe is forced to seek refuge elsewhere, all the while wondering at the sudden proclamation. Why has the government taken an interest in her, and when will she be able to return home? Unsatisfied with her lack of answers, Suthe decides to investigate. But the more she looks, the deeper she gets herself into trouble, and she comes to realize that this mystery does not involve her country alone. The threat of war looms on the horizon, and Suthe will need to put her trust in the strangers she meets, including a dangerous spy wanted for the betrayal of his own country. But most importantly, Suthe will need to trust herself, and her abilities, if she ever wants to see home again. ~*~Current cover by Amanda-Mae ~*~ ~*~Previous cover by italychick~*~

For Rene Sparks, it all began with some ink and a knife. Two dragons, one black, the other one white, appeared from nowhere to adorn her arms when she was only eleven. Their sudden appearance and permanent stains of "imperfection" sent her teetering mother over a cliff of madness to the point where she tried to cut the abominations off Rene's arms. They were the constants in her life, the dragon tattoos and the scars that traced them. Unable to fit in with the normals of society, years later, she was placed in a boarding school for youths with mental health issues, affectionately called the Asylum by its residents. The Asylum though was no haven for the insane and Rene struggled to cling to what shred of sanity there might be left from a failing system of experimental treatments and corrupted caretakers as the tattoos on her skin continue to grow in number. Rene's life was no fairy tale and she was certainly no princess, but perhaps even an insane girl can become a hero when they have some dragons up their sleeves.
