Dearest Gentle Reader,
It is a truth universally acknowledged (or at least fervently whispered in drawing rooms) that when a Bridgerton returns to Mayfair, chaos is never far behind. Imagine, then, the collective intake of breath upon this Author's discovery that the oldest Bridgerton daughter - long absent and curiously overlooked - has re-entered our orbit.
Five years ago, Miss Clarissa Bridgerton - now Dowager Viscountess Carmichael - departed from the Ton with a husband whose easy smile, title and wealth left many of her fellow debutantes green with envy. Now she returns alone draped not in the hopeful pastels of a debutante, but in the darker, more intriguing hues of wisdom.
This Author can confirm that her blue eyes, once innocent and observant, now sparkle with something far more dangerous: experience. The Ton will, of course, insist upon categorizing her. Is she to be pitied? Envied? Widows, after all, enjoy a most scandalous freedom-no maidenly reputations to preserve, no husbands to consult, and every reason to speak their minds.
Rest assured, dear reader, invitations will be extended, eyebrows will be raised, and suitors-whether foolish or bold-will circle. Whether Lady Carmichael intends to encourage such attention, or merely observe the spectacle with an amused smile, remains to be seen.
Yours,
Lady Whistledown
