Fin is a more or less normal teenage boy living in the kingdom known as Lenseia. Well, normal as in there really isn't anything special about him. He's relatively weak, not exactly ugly but definitely not handsome, and definitely not good at remembering the swordplay sequences he's supposed to have memorized to become a knight. But, well, as things do in this sort of story, that all changes when he finds the baby dragon...

Here's what NOT to do when youre writing fanfiction. This is from the many adequate fanfictions I have read (or the very horrible ones) that could be WAY better if these tips were followed.

I grew up in a world where dragon riders were revered for not only their bravery and looks, but also for their intelligence. Children would spend days on end studying just in the hopes that they would get accepted to the Rider School, and those who did get accepted left their homes like kings, followed with respect and well wishes. It had been years since a dragon rider had been accepted in the Rider School from my town, which was understandable since we boasted a population of only 100 kids in the acceptable age range. Every year we were visited by the Counselor, the man who decided who would be accepted, and every year at that time our town lit up. Festivities lasted the Counselor's whole stay, with competitions to test children's intelligence, stamina, strength, and looks set up to look like games. Every year my brothers and I would be disappointed by our results, until my 15th year, when everything changed.... I awoke covered in dirt and pine needles, in a forest, surrounded by lush vegetation and brush. It looked like it was afternoon, but I wasn’t positive. I sat up and kneaded my eyes, curious as how I came to be here. “Where am I?” I asked myself. I glanced around, looking for anything familiar, but I was positive I had never been here before. How did I get here? As I tried to stand up, my head began to spin. Suddenly, I realized why I felt so odd. I braced myself against a tree trunk and thought very hard for a moment. Yes, I was positive. I didn’t know who I was.

Jake grows up an orphan. The only thing he knows about his mother was that she was brutally murdered in a grocery store. He knows nothing of his father. Once he is in high school he begins to change. Shortly after a mysterious girl approaches him saying that she knows who he is. His hand is forced and so embarks with her on a journey to the elf world. But close behind them are the Alukai, disgusting creatures from another world who consume elves. Jake must learn to fight or he will meet the same fate as his mother.
