There in those city lights, there was no her and there was no him. There was just everything and nothing and the spaces in between, like flickering lights against a never-ending, black sky. There in those city lights, there was no love and there was no hate. There was just listening and talking and understanding every single thing, like the 'ready, stop, go' of car-chasers and dream-makers. There in those city lights, there was no sadness and there was no happiness. There was just candid smiles and wasted tears and bottom lips chewed off, like the overflowing boulevard of things unseen. There in those city lights, there was no lady and there was no man. There was just a boy and a girl, who promised to fall in love, not with each other, but in those city lights. "Sorry--Annie's a bit busy trying to figure out her life at the moment." After high school and a long list of denied college applications (and one too many headaches), Annie Horne has just about had it with trying to meticulously plan out her life down to the very last detail. And in lieu of a college education, she decides to pack up her things and move north for the year to work for her uncle's book shop in his small New England community. But it's been years since Annie's actually visted him, and the community has certainly changed since she was younger. And in a town that actually reads, manning the phones at her uncle's shop can be quite the task for an eighteen year old. But when her uncle enlists the part-time help of Theo, the obnoxiously excitable neighborhood paperboy, Annie finds her job to be a bit more complicated than she'd anticipated.

❝When I met you . . . you're the first person in my life, besides my family, that treated me like a regular human being. You're my first friend and my best friend. I would be lying if I said meeting you wasn't most the most important day of my life. And the one that would end up eventually ruining it.❞-Annalise Martin. Annalise Martin's skies are painted darkly, filled with darkness from a life many would not wish to lead. Through a series of letters, Annalise hopes to find closure over losing her best friend and lover, Finland Erickson. But sometimes, we need a little bit of perspective to paint our own skies. Mara had always wondered what happened to people and their legacy after they've died. She didn't want to be forgotten that easily, all due to the stupid fact that everyone is destined to die at one point or another. To avoid being nothing more than a mark on the ground with a few mundane words in remembrance, she started filming her life until the day that her big break in Hollywood came knocking on her door. It would make a good start to a reality TV shows or a documentary, at the very least. When Ethel found the videos of the girl, she didn't know what to expect. What she certainly didn't expect to find was a girl so lost in the world of the bright lights that she began to see them as stars lined up in front of her and the only source of light in the whole world. How long could a girl last in a world full of fake smiles and how long can Ethel watch it go on for? All Mara wanted was to be amaranthine; for her legacy to last on for years and years after she hit the END button on her camcorder, but Ethel didn't know if that was even something a teenager could handle all on her own.

Plan A might have been just as dangerous as the police insisted it was safe. It involved being locked away, out of sight and communication, and didn't solve the problem that Fran's stalkers seemed to have access to police files and data. Plan B the police didn't know about, and while the stalkers were at least temporarily out of the picture, it posed other problems. The police are now searching for her. Her stalkers are still looking for her. Her roommate doesn't know she's not a boy and a depressed teen movie star wants to be her friend. Being found out would blow her safety. Not to mention that the country thinks she might just be the victim -- or the cause -- of a spate of murders in the surrounding towns. Going to Darkwood private school was a risk, but not as risky as Plan A. The worry of trying to keep herself hidden from her schoolmates might become her main problem, but it still doesn't answer the most worrying question of all: just who were those stalkers, and what did they want? -- (Just so you all know, I've entered this book for the Hotkey Young Writers Prize. It would mean the world to me if you could support Plan B by voting for the first chapter (only votes on the first chapter count) before September 13th and then encouraging as many people as possible to read and vote as well. Thank you all so much!)
