Rebecca had been best friends with Sam Golbach for as long as she could remember. He was like a brother to her. She had a hard life growing up; her abusive, alcoholic father was hardly ever around, leaving her and her mother who was slowly getting more sick to support themselves. The year going into middle school, her mother was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. With all of the money they had saved up together over the past few years, they moved from Kansas to Pittsburgh so her mother could be treated at the cancer treatment center there. She had to leave behind her best friend; her only friend. A few months after her 17th birthday and graduation, her mom passes. After finally convincing her, she agrees to move to California with Sam and his best friend Colby.
