And now, it was 3 in the morning, and someone was knocking, quite loudly and rather rudely, on his front door. Who the fuck would be knocking on his door at the 3 in the morning? What he didn't expect to see was his (supposedly) dead best friend, soaking wet from the rain and covered in blood, standing in the doorway with a grim expression on his face. "Bucky?" Yeah, this was definitely the worst day of Steve's life. Or, the fic where Steve never enlisted in the war and never got the serum, Bucky still becomes the Winter Soldier, and a lot of heartbreak, feelings, and angst is involved.

Bucky goes off to war and goes missing for two weeks and is pronounced dead and Steve is notified of this. Steve breaks down and doesn't know what to do with himself. Bucky is found later with a metal arm and announces that he'll be taking his leave in three days to go home and take care of Steve. Fluffy stucky au. Set in the winter of 1945 and so on.
