In 1987, Prince has a band with his best friend Ace, a guy he's known since they were kids. The band is called The Cocoa Boys with Prince on the microphone, Ace on the bass, Andre on guitar, and Matt on the keyboard. Ace constantly encourages Prince to enjoy life and live a little, but Prince is obsessed with the band and making his music successful. Ace has a wife named Antonia that was a former roadie and followed the band around for a couple of years before she began dating and eventually marrying Ace. It's always good to love life...while you still have it.

Prince is, in her eyes, an amateur musician, and to Prince she's just a lost girl trying to find her way through life with her six month old baby by another man. After a couple of dates, they begin to fall in love, but just when things are getting at an ultimate high, they get shot done when Prince has to leave her...with a baby and another one on the way.

A woman named Lydia begins to work at a psychiatric hospital in Minneapolis when she discovers a twenty one year old man named Prince. She finds out quickly that he was put into the hospital the day he graduated high school. When she meets him, she realizes that he does not have what he parents claim that he has, but being in this hospital has made him forgetful of what he used to do before he was out into it. This is the tale of Lydia realizing what it sounds like when a musician doesn't cry.
