When two Rangers mysteriously go missing it's up to Halt and Will to find them. However things don't go as planned and soon they find themselves trapped in the clutches of a past enemy, the Genovesans. While imprisoned they learn that the assassins are in league with the Temujai who plan on invading Araluen. Will they be able to escape... or is this the end? A young girl raised at Redmont with stories of the adventures and travels of Will Treaty and Halt the Ranger longs for what they have. At fifteen it finally becomes her reality as she gets accepted as Will's apprentice. But everything isn't as it should be in the kingdom and she suddenly becomes a part of those stories told in front of the fireplace.

Who knows where Will is? Will has been missing for a few days already and has made no contact with anybody. Halt set out to find him but ehag he finds almost breaks him. Will he let his dicoveries crush him and everything he holds dear or will he rise up to the challenge and face it head on?
