Imagine a world where being happy is a law.
If you're sad, you die.
This is what life is like for 15 year old Emma. She comes from a 'happy' family of four. Her mother who works as a nurse, her father who works as a police officer and her 16 year old brother who has no responsibilities other than school. Everyone in Emma's family is happy. Besides Emma, that is.
"Take your joy and everything will be okay." Her mothers states with a smile. "You can forget every bad thing that's happened. Everything will be better, forever." Leaving the room, she smiles at her lovely depressed daughter.
At the age of 13 Emma's family was killed. They lived outside of the district in the poor side of town because they were considered 'downers'. Downers are people who have REAL emotions. They have sadness, anger, fear and happiness. Yes, happiness. But they aren't happy all the time
The only family member of Emma's that wasn't killed was her 14 year old brother who she is in search of. Emma fakes being happy in front of her family and friends. Emma has been searching for her brother for 3 years and hasn't lost hope despite her depression.
Will Emma remember the painful events in her life to help her find her brother, or will she cave in and take her Joy?
