Mairi wants a miracle for Christmas. But the things she has taken as miracles - Kennan and his love, eighteen and its freedom - have only been prelude to a misunderstood pattern: the nature of life is not that it gives, and that it takes away. It is that she will be given a choice.

Ariel Fontansia is ten pounds away from total relapse. Since the previous summer, she has been stuck in a vicious cycle of calories, pounds, and inches. Redemption, Maine, isn't another escape -- it's a dead end. With no one to keep her disorder in check and hallucinations of a dead cousin driving her insane, she falls into an isolation that could prove detrimental. Standing in her way is a black-eyed boy with an anger complex: Price Olsen, who wants her to see more than the bad side of his grief. With an absentee father and a mute little sister, he recognizes the signs of someone on the edge. He wants to save Ariel, but up until this point, he's had a nasty penchant for ruining relationships. When her best friend overdoses, Ariel is forced to face the deterioration of her own mind and body. Price, frustrated by his inability to help her, fights the anger that threatens to take an ugly twist. As their fragile friendship teeters, another bruised, broken teenager chasing reconciliation stumbles through their lives. Yet she isn't just another damsel; this girl has a history in Redemption that involves the death of Ariel's cousin. Peaceful lives unraveling, all three discover that Redemption is harboring a secret with dangerous consequences. Now, they will be forced to face their past - and their present - to determine the course of their future. But how far are they willing to go for redemption?

[Original] [You are my sunshine, my only sunshine...] I held my breath. It was time. I saw the trust in your eyes when I found the way inside. All of you were ready for this ride. You followed me, like you always do. The sun beat down on us as we dove in, ready to explore the cave within. Like dolphins to water, without a doubt. That bright turquoise hue was meant to illuminate you. [...you make me happy when skies are gray] I didn't have a clue that inside that deep blue was actually pain there waiting for you. Waiting for us. We were trapped. Caught in the horror of life to death. Frank was the last to dive in, the last in line, and the first to die. The blood seeped from the slashes on his chest and I watched as he took his last breath. He was family, you see, my cousin's father. Following in the footsteps of his own daughter, searching for adventure. Searching for life, but destined to pay the price. Without a doubt, like dolphins to water. [You'll never know dear how much I love you.] Now we're here, trembling in fear, huddled in corners. On repeat. Caught in a time loop of my mistakes, trapped in the cave we'd claimed. Trying to retreat just to experience defeat. We dive, he dies. We dive, he dies. We dive, we die. [Please don't take my sunshine away.] Shouldn't I have felt it? Shouldn't I have known, that we would all die in a wet cave of stone? That beautiful, newly added cover was done (very swiftly) by xXArachnidXx (http://www.wattpad.com/user/xXArachnidXx).
