In the country of Illea, decades after the ruling of the great King Maxon and Queen America, the caste system has been integrated back into their society, along with the popular, and ever thrilling, Selection. When Hallow is persuaded by her father to sign up for Prince Lucas-Alexander Schreave's upcoming Selection, she doubts her chances of her dreams actually coming true. That is, until, she gets selected, and gets the chance to leave her comfortable farm life for not only the Royal Palace, but also a whole bunch of opportunities she's not sure she's ready to take. Agatha Flint is an oil-ridden construction worker trying to help support her family, The Dust Bunnies-a tight-nit group of wayward girls who are Sixes, Sevens, and Eights-the lowest classes in Illéa, proudly worn titles by The Dust Bunnies. Agatha, despite being dirt poor, is content with the life in her house of tough, interesting friends. Well, almost content. All she wants to do is give her her family a better life from poverty. Become an inventor. Help her best friend Meg become a doctor. That can't happen as Sevens and Eights though. Not even the better off Sixes of the group can achieve such freedom- only Threes and Twos can have such social standing. That was until the leaders of Illéa announced that they were going to hold a Selection- a chance for any girl in the country to compete with 36 girls for the crown; marry a prince. ...Give your family a higher caste, namely out of poverty. Agatha knows she has to get in once her and the Dust Bunnies receive a letter, stating they're eligible for entering. A chance to be in the Selection, a chance at a better life. By miracle, Agatha is selected. One problem though when your competing for a prince's hand in marriage... She doesn't want to be a princess, or a queen-and she especially doesn't want to marry a prince. Not when your bi and have a crush on another girl. Or when you want to start a revolution. All Agatha has to do is stay in the Selection for as long as she can, and get out as soon as she gets too close to the prince. Shouldn't be too hard, right?
