Emma Woodhouse, aged 20 at the start of the novel, is a young, beautiful, witty, and privileged woman in Regency England. She lives on the fictional estate of Hartfield in Surrey in the village of Highbury with her elderly widowed father, a hypochondriac who is excessively concerned for the health and safety of his loved ones. Emma's friend and only critic is the gentlemanly George Knightley, her neighbour from the adjacent estate of Donwell, and the brother of her elder sister Isabella's husband, John. As the novel opens, Emma has just attended the wedding of Miss Taylor, her best friend and former governess. Having introduced Miss Taylor to her future husband, Mr. Weston, Emma takes credit for their marriage, and decides that she rather likes matchmaking.

Amanda is a young lady who has been abused sexually by those she loves. She now believes that love is just a myth and miracle, a dream. She gets the chance to escape the terror of her home after years of torture. What is life preparing for her? How is she going to cope with what life throws at her with that belief. MY NUMB HEART is a book of love, hate , deceit, betrayal and acceptance. I am pulled out of my thoughts when I inhale the smell of cigarette right beneath my nose. "Won't you talk?" He asks, clearly annoyed by my silence. "I am sorry. I would give you anything you want, just leave alone" I beg. "Anything you say" He smiles a very sadistic smile showing his yellow lower teeth. It makes me cringe a little; he notices this small movement and shifts closer to me, pressing my upper body to his. "What is a rich fine girl like you doing at 2:00AM on a street like this?" He says while running his calloused fingers on my cheek in a sick way that is making me want to throw up. "P-please" I stutter. I can feel my body shaking vigorously and my throat clogging up but I stay strong and keep praying that he will just leave me alone. "Shut up and answer me" He growls. "I am going to a friend's house. She would soon be here to pick me. If you just let me go, I promise you won't see me in this street again. Please?" I ask again. He laughs at my obvious fear, I think.
