He didn't know how he was created or who did it and what his reason for existing was. Even Garnet the somewhat appointed leader of the Crystal Gems didn't know what he was since there has never been a Gem with Obsidian as their Gem. It had been a first for everyone. To get a better understanding of him the crystal Gems decide to take Obsidian on as a Crystal Gem student just as Steven, and would one day become a full fledged member.
