Idiot je ne samo jedan od najvažnijih romana F. M. Dostojevskoga, nego i jedan od najutjecajnijih i najcjenjenijih romana svjetske književnosti uopće, te preteča suvremenog psihološkog romana. Središnji lik romana je idealan, moralan, dobar i human lik mladog kneza Miškina, "idiota", koji se po povratku iz švicarskog sanatorija, gdje se više godina liječio od epileptičnih napadaja, u Petrograd, zatiče usred iskvarenog, materijalističkog i nemoralnog svijeta i međuljudskih odnosa raznolike galerije likova, kako društvene elite, tako i siromašnog polusvijeta. Jednostavan i istovremeno ingeniozan poput djeteta, Miškin ne poznaje laž i licemjerje, ne razumije i ne cijeni novac, ne snalazi se u složenim proračunatim ljubavnim, bračnim i obiteljskim odnosima, pa njegova dobrota, naivnost i društvena nefunkcionalnost u takvom okružju dovode do katastrofe. Ideja opisivanja sudbine, kako Dostojevski sam kaže, "apsolutno divna čovjeka", rađala se kod autora postepeno. U pismu svojoj nećakinji Dostojevski tijekom stvaranja Idiota piše: "Svi pisci, ne samo naši, nego čak i svi europski, koji se god prihvatio da prikaže apsolutnu divotu - svi su zatajili do jednoga. Taj je zadatak, naime, neizmjerno težak. Divota je ideal, a ideal - ni naš, ni ideal civilizirane Europe - nije još ni približno ostvaren." Svoga Miškina Dostojevski oblikuje najviše po uzoru na Don Quijotea, roman kojega je izuzetno cijenio i kojega se često spominje u romanu, ali i druge slične likove iz europskih književnosti, a u sferi duhovnosti i prema Kristu.
