After the end of the game, all players' memories were wiped out, and they were sent to live in earth. The trolls were the lucky ones that remembered after a few weeks or months. Most of them having their memories fully recovered. The humans weren't so lucky. Some memories were wiped out completely along with their personalities. Most relationships were dissolved. A few started over new relationships from scratch and fewer relationships remained. This led to new and fresh personalities, new relationships and the sore that the ones with full and an intact memory felt. Karkat was one of the ones that recovered their memory almost completely. He remembered his matespriteship with Dave Strider, right after they met after the Homecoming announcement. Unfortunately, Dave doesn't remember his relationship with Karkat.
