"Sometimes happiness feels like a chore." So Andrew shouldn't wonder why he's virtually a self-induced insomniac who might just very well die of loneliness one day.

Lexi Callaghan is broken. From a traumatic childhood that still haunts her, to her slowly deteriorating mental health, things are pretty bleak. Defeat Morgwyn was born into the last years of human life on Earth. On her fifth birthday, her parents, along with half the world's population, left Earth for Orbis - a planet in a distant solar system - handing her over to a huge government-run orphanage. By the time she was ten, the orphanage and a group known as the Correctors - the members of the world's government and military who were tasked with repairing the earth - were the only humans left on Earth. At the age of eighteen, Defeat is given a choice: get on the next ship to Orbis, or become the newest recruit of the Correctors. Unwilling to leave her one and only home, she chooses to stay, and is thrust into a military style world where school is about survival skills, self-defence, and what needs to be done to repair the Earth. But Defeat soon starts to realise that there's more to the Correctors than they're letting on, and when disaster strikes, she's faced with an impossible decision: abandon the people she's been trained to help, or embark on a terrifying mission to save them.
