Thea and her mum are psychics who give readings from their narrow boat, 'The Black Rose'. They can look into the future, and see other things that most people can't. Thea knows there is something out there, in the 'shadow hills', beyond the gleaming fields of wheat and the old abandoned house she calls the Castle; something she can sense, just out of reach. On the other side of the Castle, Linden is a 'seer' who looks into the endless other parallel worlds that exist before the rest of his family venture into them. But of all the things he has seen, it is the world he can see at the Castle where a serious violet-eyed girl wanders the overgrown gardens that interests him most. Their two worlds are destined to collide and when they do Thea finds herself somewhere she could never have imagined and from where she is not sure she will ever be able to return.
