Laurie has lost both her parents and is struggling to keep her and her little sister alive. When shes out on her daily scavenger hunt for food, she sees Quinn, a boy of her own age, injured and hungry. She doesn't like him at all - she doesn't need another mouth to feed - but her little sister begs her, cries, even, so that she has to let Quinn stay with them.
