Eyelids fall and the body is alone once more. A long ache to stop feeling settles beneath its chest. In a precise spot beneath the heart and behind the rib cage near to the spleen and down to the pit of the stomach - the venom settles. It spreads up into the inflated lungs, seeping its cold fingers up the twisted collarbone and wrapping itself around the throat. The tendrils of toxins creep their way into the mouth, leaving a sour taste behind. They sneak their way into the pearly whites of the eyes and dance sanctimoniously around the irises and eyelashes. Friendship comes and goes alongside the passage of time, but sometimes, the bonds between certain people are stronger than normal. Eventually, Stephen started using alcohol to cope with his denial. Yet, that wasn't enough. Perhaps the East has a cure, a so-called 'Ancient One' to mend his nerves and let him operate once again. And so, he fled, so desperate that Rachael never even crossed his mind, not when he packed, not when he got on the plane. She didn't even know that he was leaving in the first place.
