When her friend is transformed by a mysterious encounter in what appears to be a dilapidated thrift shop, Nicola Roth is thrust into a world where the mute speak and the doubtful become activists, a world where human nature itself becomes clay in the hands of the traders. Very few are aware of the existence of an underground network of merchants known only as the Traders. They deal not in material goods, but memories, emotion, and inherent traits. Their clients are the world's cesspool of wretched, unwanted, and lost. By joining their ranks as an apprentice, Nicola believes she is fulfilling a wild fantasy. But as her involvement with the Traders exposes a political underbelly and a decades-old hatred, an unexpected threat forces her to call into question all she knows about humanity and the consequences of meddling in what is sacred. Lazarus Stork had a rather unhealthy fondness for food... Thus begins this somewhat disappointing tale of love and muffins (and love of muffins). This story does not have a particularly innovative name, nor does it have any "traditional" Sleepy Hollow themes (such as decapitation), and I'm very sorry for that. It is not all that exciting, if one is used to exciting elements in Sleepy Hollow adaptations (such as decapitation), but what it lacks in excitement, it makes up for in... Muffins. So go ahead and pick up this muffin of a story and read to your heart's discontent. I'd warn you that you should never read anything I've written, but it looks like I'm already too late. ******* ******* ******* ******* ******* ******* ******* This story is an entry in the #OnceUponNow contest. The voting period is between June 14 and June 20-something. (Of course I don't know all the details. That would seem too desperate.) I would greatly appreciate votes (obviously) but should you decide that this story is not worth a click, you shall remain perfectly safe because I cannot threaten to set my iguanas on you, due to the nature of the contest.

Sherlock Holmes has become legend, but his sister was lost to history. In one hellish night, Morrigan Holmes ruined everything: her home, her family, her confidence, and her name. Fleeing scandal, loss, and grief, her only choice is to run, but London's gaslit streets are not kind to young women alone. Within hours, she discovers the horrors of homelessness and the terrible invisibility of the marginalised poor. A child is kidnapped before her eyes, and she barely escapes the same fate. Adrift and alone, Morrigan seeks help in strange quarters: a radical suffragist with a haunted past, a half-blind journalist, a sinister physician, and a gang of street boys led by the striking and enigmatic Magpie. As the number of kidnappings grows, something dark begins to take shape in the London mists. Time is short, still Morrigan cannot escape the family she devastated. Could Sherlock be her salvation... or her destruction?
