In the midst of the Great War, President William Mercer secured humanity's future by constructing an underground refuge he named Providence. Buried deep beneath the ruined surface of the Earth, it was presented as a sanctuary - a carefully engineered society designed to preserve order in a world that had destroyed itself.
Entry was never guaranteed. Every citizen was required to undergo an evaluation before being admitted, a test meant to determine their value within the new civilization. Those who passed were assigned to one of four divisions: Creatives, Intellectuals, Athletics, or Socials. Each group served a purpose. Each person was given a role. Those who failed were denied entry.
For years, the system worked. Harmony was maintained. Providence thrived.
When Lia Rhodes turned sixteen, she completed her evaluation and was placed among the Creatives. She accepted her role, just like everyone else. But as the years passed, something inside her began to shift. Her thoughts tangled in ways she could not explain. Moments felt distorted. Certain details refused to settle. The doctors called it The Confusion and prescribed medication meant to quiet the unrest in her mind. Lia tried to believe them.
Until the day she noticed him.
A boy she had never seen before.
In Providence, everyone knows everyone. There are no new arrivals, no strangers wandering unfamiliar corridors. Yet this boy moved through the bunker as if he had always belonged there. People greeted him by name. Laughed with him. Spoke of shared memories Lia knew had never happened.
When Lia brings it up to her sister, Nora dismisses her concerns and urges her to stop asking questions. It is safer not to notice things that do not make sense.
But Lia cannot ignore him.
And when she finally confronts the boy and demands to know who he is, he does not hesitate.
He smirks.
"I'm Jacob Mercer."
