In a dark time, the eye begins to see, I meet my shadow in the deepening shade; I hear my echo in the echoing wood-- A lord of nature weeping to a tree, I live between the heron and the wren, Beasts of the hill and serpents of the den. From--"In a Dark Time" by Theodore Roethke

Yesterday was our 18th anniversary, but I did not buy my husband a gift. Instead, I baked seven pies. Year eighteen, with its traditional gifts of porcelain and garnets, hadn’t been a banner year, or put either of us in a gift-giving mood. I believe, as wholeheartedly as I can, that next year’s anniversary will be worth celebrating.

After spending a year teaching in Thailand, I longed to travel with only my quirky self to keep me company. My journey started in Myanmar where temple cycles and village treks exposed me to the past and present of this intriguing nation. I returned to Northern Thailand for a volunteer experience and some of the most ingenious and adrenaline-pumping New Year's celebrations. Indonesia's smiling faces warmed my heart and even coaxed me out on a date or two. Join in if you've ever wanted to experience the beauty of a volcanic sunrise, the joy of Javanese hospitality or the thrill of a five-day water festival where joining a water war is as easy as saying 'Sawatdee!' or 'Hello' for my English readers.

Night Shadow is a double-nonet poem consisting of two nine line halves (the bottom mirrors the shape of the top). A single nonet poem has nine lines with nine syllables in line one and then each line has one syllable less until line nine has only one syllable.  In this double-nonet poem the bottom half mirrors the top half and starts with one syllable ascending in the number of syllables each line has until the last line has nine, totaling eighteen lines.
