The beginning looked like darkness, and from the Darkness, the Lady Fate was born. For millenia, she ruled, creating at her whim, and taking away as she saw fit, spinning the Fates of millions. For Humankind, magic is all but a legend, invented to scare children into staying in at night, and to give people a reason to dream of a higher purpose in life. But for Fate's most loved creation, her Arcana, it is a burden, causing a constant struggle for power in the Arcane World, wild, unpredictable. Maeve Segret has been on the run for most of her life, having taken refuge in the Human World after fleeing from the Arcane World in a rebellion that nearly destroyed everything the Arcana worked for. Descended from the ancient Ruling House of the Arcana, she is hunted for the abilities she possesses, as well as the power they are capable of unlocking. But when a betrayal rocks the thin safety she has managed to create, Maeve finds herself thrust headfirst into the world she has been running from for so long. Ancient Evil lurks in the shadows of the Arcane World, looking to bring power tumbling to its knees. War threatens, magic runs wild, and no one is safe. Maeve reluctantly finds herself as one of few left capable of standing in the way of her enemies goals. And they will do anything they can to get their way.

A guide to using the Tarot as a tool in crafting characters, plots, and settings. Included are various spreads and interpretations I've come up with over the years, for use in my own projects. Any deck can be used, though I highly suggest the Rider-Waite deck for its timeless imagery. The Tarot is much more than a simple divination tool. It can be applied in many different ways by writers. My work is heavily inspired by this ancient system, and I'm pleased to share my insights with you. If you have any suggestions, or questions in general, feel free to comment! I can also do personal consultations as my time allows.

Like most beginnings, the Lies the Cards Tell project deserves a little backstory. I had a little spark of an idea. I wanted to base a short story on each tarot card. It's been done and I never could quite get a unique enough twist to make it worthwhile. Thus, that little ember smouldered in the back of my head for a while. The fire ignited when a writing tip for using tarot card readings to break out of writer's block wedged itself in my brain and I needed a novel idea for NaNoWriMo 2014. Why not write a novel starting each day with a full tarot reading? Brilliant. Then life came along and had its way with that idea. Lies the Cards Tell was more than a novel so continuing it without the community aspect of NaNoWriMo felt incomplete so I passed it over for other ideas and moved on. But like any good tarot reading it lingers and nags until you accept the lesson it holds. Being a sci-fi and futurology nerd, I have a bit of a love affair with open source concepts and I believe even though we have to find a way to make a living on this earth, information wants to be free, evolve and grow. Lies the Cards Tell proved the perfect candidate to take directly to the reader in a weekly format. It allows me to open up the often rigid publication process and let you, the reader, have some fun. Every week I grab a deck out of my beloved tarot collection and do a reading. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy Lies the Cards Tell as much as I enjoy working on it. Colette is the Chariot, under the rulership of Cancer, titled with The Lord of Triumph of Light. Ayla is the Moon, under the rulership of Pieces, titled with The Child of the Sons of the Mighty. Egon is the Three of Swords, under the rulership of the Kingdom of Swords, titled The Lord of Sorrow. Cyrus is the King of Wands, under the rulership of the Kingdom of Wands, titled The Prince of the Chariot of Fire. Lenna is Strength, under the rulership of Leo, titled The Daughter of the Flaming Sword. All of these children were born into the ancient deck of the Arcana, each with a main card, and many more spiritual symbols than just the card, going into ancient Roman/Greek mythology, ancient Egyptian mythology, the Zodiac symbols, Native American spirit animals, Alchemy, the spiritual realms of Buddhism, the seven essences or souls of humans, and more. They must compete against the other cards and go through the ten rings of the universe to be added to the archaic community of the Arcana. If, however, they do not win, they must shuffled back into the deck for centuries until they are again drawn. Who will win the card game of the Gods? Who will fight for equality? All have opportunities to rise up, but all have different endings.
