In 19th century London, Jacob's Island was a poverty-stricken slum that bore a notoriously high population of criminals and prostitutes. Nora, a young woman made of wire and whiskey, lives in the slums and works for August, a man infamous for the prostitutes he solicits and the amount of gin he consumes. Harboring idealistic hopes for a better future, Nora frequently finds herself forced into the role of pariah outside the community of August's girls. The only friend she's ever had--Edward Stokes--has evolved into August's right-hand man and second-in-command of a violent gang. When her employer strays from his MO and kidnaps a high-class young woman, Nora is suddenly confronted with a conflict she never expected.
