When the time for her aptitude test approaches, she desperately hopes her result will be different; however, in her case the results are inconclusive, labeling her as a Divergent. Imara, heavily thrown off by her results, has to choose for herself. She makes the conscious decision of choosing Dauntless, the faction dedicated to protecting the people. On the parallel end is Darcie Brenton, born of Erudite faction. Her aptitude test reveals that she is destined to be Dauntless. Despite her results, Darcie fears she is not brave enough to transfer due to the impounding pressure of her controlling mother. However, when she sees a fellow Erudite effortlessly switch to Dauntless, she decides to make the change herself. When Imara and Darcie cross paths in the Dauntless initiation, they find an immediate connection. They both share a goal of wanting to overcome their past and prove those who doubt them wrong. The two befriend Tobias and Eric, who are constantly at war with each other. Eventually and with much hesitation, they band together and form an alliance. Imara and Tobias, with their alternate thinking, begin to uncover secrets behind their faction system: every second of every day, they are being observed by some unknown power in attempt to find the perfect society for sustaining peace.

[SEQUEL TO 'BEHIND THOSE VIOLET EYES'] It is said that once one is crowned victor of the Hunger Games, they never have to return to the arena. Every twenty-five years, there is a change in the Games for that year only. These special years are called Quarter Quells... and for this year's Quell, the Capitol has created something beyond anyone's imagination. For the seventy-fifth annual Hunger Games, the tributes will be Reaped out of their District's own pool of victors... And only two can win if they are from the same District... Cyra Merison, Alia Fletson, Cato Demeir, and Gale Hawthorne are all Reaped back into the Games for another year to participate in the bloodbath. And this year, not all of them will have the odds in their favour. For Cyra, this year is especially horrific. Not only is she Reaped back into something she loathes, but is also forced to marry someone she hates under the power of President Frost. Alia, on the other hand, takes her Career training to a whole new level and proves to everyone she intends on winning. And with the 'sudden' death of head Gamemaker Seneca Crane, President Frost takes control of the Games this year. He makes it clear to all of Panem who his favourite tributes are... And if the citizens are smart, they will bet on them as well. The tributes will be forced to fight harder than ever if they wish to win. Because, in the end, only the strong will survive.

The country of Panem has been a dark place since the first rebellion years ago. Now, as punishment for their uprising, each year two female and two male tributes are sent into the arena to fight to the death in the Hunger Games, a bloodbath broadcasted for all of Panem. Cyra Merison, a fifteen year old girl from District Four has been an outcast since she was a child. With her fiery personality and bright violet eyes, she's never been part of the 'in' crowd. Not to mention, she's entirely against the Capitol in every way. Alia Fletson, a sixteen year old girl from District Two, has been training for the Hunger Games her entire life. Along with her best friend Cato Demeir, they make an unstoppable team. And then there's Gale Hawthorne. The poor boy from District Twelve, who has a secret that could change the course of a lifetime forever. When the four collide, rivalries are instantly formed, boundaries are crossed, and things seem to spiral out of control. But maybe this isn't for the worst. People can always come together in different ways, and come together to stand up for what is right. Everything happens for a reason, after all...
