Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a 14th-century historical novel attributed to Luo Guanzhong. It is set in the turbulent years towards the end of the Han dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period in Chinese history, starting in 169 AD and ending with the reunification of the land in 280 by Western Jin. The novel is based primarily on the Records of the Three Kingdoms, written by Chen Shou. The story - part historical, part legend, and part mythical - romanticises and dramatises the lives of feudal lords and their retainers, who tried to replace the dwindling Han dynasty or restore it. While the novel follows hundreds of characters, the focus is mainly on the three power blocs that emerged from the remnants of the Han dynasty, and would eventually form the three states of Cao Wei, Shu Han, and Eastern Wu. The novel deals with the plots, personal and military battles, intrigues, and struggles of these states to achieve dominance for almost 100 years. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is acclaimed as one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature; it has a total of 800,000 words and nearly a thousand dramatic characters (mostly historical) in 120 chapters. The novel is among the most beloved works of literature in East Asia, and its literary influence in the region has been compared to that of the works of Shakespeare on English literature. It is arguably the most widely read historical novel in late imperial and modern China. Herbert Giles stated that among the Chinese themselves, this is regarded as the greatest of all their novels.

The world under heaven, after a long period of division, must unite; after a long period of union, must divide. The Han flame flickers in the wind. By the sixteenth year of Jian'an, the north has bowed to the towering ambition of the Prime Minister, Cao Cao. From the ruins of the Central Plains, the Kingdom of Wei has begun to rise like a dragon from the mist, yet the path to total peace is choked by thorns. To the West, the lions of Liang Province sharpen their spears, and at Tong Pass, the fate of the earth hangs by a single silken thread. One victory will cement a dynasty; one defeat will shatter the world. Into this crucible of blood and iron steps Boze of Wuwei. He is no ordinary scholar of the Classics. For three generations, his kin have gathered the forgotten wisdom of the Silk Road-scrolls of strange scripts and relics of distant empires where the West meets the East. Carrying a mind forged in the fires of two worlds, Boze arrives as the chosen ward of the "Poisonous Strategist," Jia Xu. Bound by an ancestral promise, the elder master prepares his protege to navigate a sea of predators. But Boze does not dream only of conquest. Though he must lead men into the maw of legend and clash with the giants of the age, his heart harbors a vision unseen since the dawn of time. He seeks to bind the wounds of the land not with the blade alone, but through the profound alchemy of diplomacy and the soul. From the grim slaughter of the mountain passes to the shadowed corridors of power-joined in spirit by a stalwart guardian of law and a brilliant spark of the southern fire-Boze will guide a new generation. By the year 220, the blood of the Three Kingdoms shall water the seeds of a new era. In the ancient capital of Luoyang, a Philosopher-King shall rise, and a Renaissance shall bloom from the ashes of war.
