Alan, a once outgoing, happy sixteen year old from Boston, is sent to live with his grandparents in California, following his parents death. Following their death, and old friends turning away from him, he decides to shut himself off from the world. He becomes quite, reserved, depressed and has refused to let anyone in since the night that changed his life forever. But what happens when Austin, a sixteen year old boy who is angry with life and one of the school's biggest bullies is dared to make Alan fall in love with him with the intentions of destorying him?

Austin, a warm and caring person, applies for a position in a mental hospital far away from his home in Phoenix. Looking to make a difference, and to really start his life, he takes the job. Alan, a 16 year old diagnosed with undifferentiated-type schizophrenia, is just trying to coast and find his way through the hospital without going into an episode when he meets the new orderly, Austin. Austin is taken with the young inpatient's beauty, and finds himself just wanting to be near Alan, and to help him. Alan feels an undeniable attraction to the older, but is ever held back by his paranoid delusions. How will he overcome? And how will Austin deal with his conflicting feelings?

Alan is starting his first year of college and trying to convince himself he'll survive. Though after meeting his roommate, Austin, he's not so sure anymore.

John didn't move for a good minute or two. Then he set down his guitar and stood up. He walked over and sat down on the edge of Paul's bed and cupped the younger boy's face in his hands. "Paulie, listen to me. I'm in love with you. You. You, and no one else. I will never love someone the way I love you. Nor will I love someone to such intensity. I love you. I love you. I love you." Paul smiled. Because it was exactly what he needed to hear to put his brain at ease. "I know....I love you, too."
