Echtrai) is one of a category of Old Irish literature about a hero's adventures in the Otherworld (see Tír na nÓg and Mag Mell); the otherworldly setting is the distinctive trait of these tales. Once I was a god. Worshiped. Revered. The huddled masses cast themselves at my feet, heads bowed and eyes wide. Save us, they begged. Spare us, they pleaded. And, fool that I was, I tried. Now I am nothing. Fallen. A bitter memory of an age long passed. A broken old fool too stubborn to die. This is my story. My rise, my fall. The pathetic mess, after. Read it. Don’t. I care little. My words are not for you.

A friend, lost to black flames. A mother, burnt to ashes. A brother, with empty skin. A girl, whose heart he'd broken. A golden pocket watch, with an expiration date. These things have haunted Cale Schatten from the moment he awoke halfway around the world from his former home of the Academy, bruised, bloody – but breathing. And damned. The world around him was burning – and they didn’t even know it yet. The Order at his home, broken. The Abnormals, rouges. And a new danger on the horizon, hell-bent on revenge and lusting for blood. Shattered promises, sleepless nights and cold embraces – the light left to the world that Cale had once sworn to protect has gone out; and he is lost. But a salvation lies in the darkness… And to gain it, he must break rules, push limits and destroy the last ties to the humanity he’d lost from the moment he’d slipped his soul – the old Cale is no more. Something darker lies within. Racing against slipping time, dodging enemies who want his head and the Order which he’d once served, Cale has but one goal in mind… but even that is questioned when he uncovers more about a past hidden from him, about a family he’d never known existed – and a legacy struck down as a curse. Bonds are tested. Friendships are forged. Loves are lost. Nothing, and no one, is ever as they seem.
