Lucy, a 17-year old slave girl, was born on the plantation, works on the plantation, and will most likely die on the plantation. She knows little of the world past the plantation, but that doesn't keep her from wondering about it. With the rare abilities to read and write, she knows there's a better life out there for her; it's just a matter of where. Deciding to find her better life, she runs away to the north, hoping to make a living for herself. But, on her way to freedom, Lucy encounters Koi, the 21-year old son of an Indian tribe's chief. He welcomes her into his tribe, showing her the ways of the world and the heart. At Koi's side, Lucy ventures beyond the cotton fields.

Ariyn was the girlfriend of the dope boy Micah, they had an on and off relationship since both of them were afraid of commitment, but then Micah introduces Ariyn to his best friend Kaizer, where sparks flew the first time him and Ariyn laid eyes on one another. Not wanting to cross the line and betray Micah they steer clear of each other for as long as they can, but the heat building up in their bodies make that more than difficult when they let the connection between them fuel the fire. Micah was the new IT man in the streets, everyone wanted to be him. He knew that if he didn't move smart that he could end up in a body bag, which left him with the mentality to kill off anyone who had a problem with him, but there's a new guy in town that isn't easily scared away. Boosters, strippers and hoes fell somewhere in the middle, while the crack heads and the civilians clung to the last wrung. Everyone knew their assigned roles and no one ever deviated from the script. Cleopatra James, an unremarkable thirteen year old girl, understood better than anyone, her dictated place in the procession. But that didn't mean she accepted the role she'd been given to play.
