Surveillance cameras, I told myself as I walked on, never slowing my pace. The Inspection Bureau was an important part of Astu, just as the Gates that kept us in this city were, where we were unable to leave. Not that anyone had ever wanted to, of course. Astu was a technological paradise where civilians of all walks of life had no worries. They had obligations, sure: have an education, go to work, have a family, obey the law, etc. It was a reasonable System. Those who wanted to leave gained permission to do so, but they were never allowed back. Those who disobeyed were forced to leave sometimes, and they were kept away by force. Actually, no one ever knew their fate. Not in detail, anyway. On my way to the designated room, I caught bits and pieces of broken conversations, ones that managed to seep from behind those metal doors. I mostly ignored them. It wasn't my business. There was a guard donned in black just outside of the door that I remembered as the room I'd been assigned to. Hesitantly, I walked up to the visor-wearing sentry. I tried my best to ignore the vest and the loaded gun strapped to his side. "Excuse me," I greeted politely, hesitation soaking into my tone. A guard before my door, blocking entry, was definitely a new development. Grunting softly, the guard eyed me through the visor. "Ms. McDonald?" "Yes," I confirmed more steadily.
