| 𝟳𝘅 𝗙𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘𝗗 ·|| HUNGER GAMES x CINDER || ONC 2023 Honorable Mention Amidst the escalating unrest between the windborne utopian city of Lighthaven and its seedy, oppressed underbelly Fumedge, the Grand Duke of Lighthaven, Lucius Sextus, comes up with an ingenious solution. To provide much-wanted respite from the brewing conflict, and achieve the apparent-if-temporary unity, he organizes Gaslight Trials - a highly entertaining panem-et-circenses combat event in the Pits. The combatants may use all steam and thaumaturgy powered augmentations at their disposal, and there is only one rule: defeat, or be defeated. The reward for the last one standing? A chance to start their life anew. A brass key to the city of Lighthaven with a luxurious mansion to call their own within, as well as an aeroship to command. When eighteen-year-old Veda Igglesden steps forward to take her timeworn adoptive father's place in the fight, she might as well be signing her death-sentence. With her eyes fully set on the prize, act-first-think-later Veda must harness the power of technology to try and win for her Papa Otto. Decades of breathing in the toxic air of Fumedge did a number on the old inventor's lungs, and being able to live in the air-filtered Lighthaven would sure come in handy right about now. A high-flying adventure full of gadgetry and intrigue; a pleasing blend of steampunk and postapocalyptic. See Veda unravel the mysterious ploy behind the game's organization, and uncover the truth about her secret origins. Can she cope both with the trials of physical and intellectual prowess, as well as with the trials of life itself: those of love, loss and regret? © 2023 EvelynHail Exclusively on Wattpad Based on prompt 49! Which is (I shan't leave ye hanging :P): "Master the rules of the game until you can play it better than they can." Michael Scott, "The Sorceress" Get ready for steampunkish tinkering,

Tell me, when you wake up, have you ever felt you have the most vivid and wonderful dream and wanted to grasp it before it went away? Or, on the contrary, have you woken up screaming, holding the blanket for dear life and running around the house to check that all your loved ones are ok? This is a collection of those sparks shaped into short stories I have written through the years. I hope you like them.

Mullets. Precisely why they exist, I suspect we'll never know. But, nevertheless, exist they do. There are bad mullets and there are...well, less bad mullets and there are mullets whose very being make one question the fundamental tenets of reality. While the 80s gave us many fine things, I would argue the mullet is not among them. And yet, it would appear the mullet is resurgent. From the schoolyard to the sporting field, fine fellows featuring flowing locks flaunt their fashion-free flair in growing numbers, while the command "Short up front and leave the back alone" once again rings out in barbershops and hairdressers across the globe. This is weird. Very weird. Perhaps a review of some of history's...um, finest(?) mullets may shed some light on this mystery. Perhaps not. Let us see.

ONC 2020 Grand Winner ~ ~ "When the halls run red with the poison of your life, I will rest. Until then, consider your ruin a promise of mine." ~ ~ Four years ago, Yin Ruwei sold her blood to the northern god Xuanwu in return for revenge. Mu'en is more brutal, more cunning . . . and less heartless than he'd wish the world to know. Someone has been killing off his men with all the fury of a hurricane. Tearstained anger blankets every death and he almost feels sorry for the murderer - until they kill the man he loves. Ruwei and Mu'en find themselves on two sides of the same coin, counting fate like they do the stars in the sky, hoping for a better day, a happier life, a brighter world in the shadows they call home. Sometimes you must seek what you've lost to retrieve it again. Sometimes that which you've lost can no longer be retrieved. And sometimes, just sometimes, those broken pieces find their way back to you. ~ ~ ONC 2020. Prompt 4. Talk about pressure. Fantasy and reality collide, as George battles to save his life, his family and - well, pretty much everything - from the forces of evil, while hopefully also addressing the no-girlfriend problem. Unless, that is, he gets killed to death first. Which would at least sort out the exams issue.
