The kingdom of Mare has prospered since the monarchy was created one hundred years ago. In all that time, though, there has always been an heir. Until now. The king and queen, childless rulers of Mare, need an heir - and they know that installing the Grand Duke onto the throne would bring dissent to their kingdom. The history books, detailing Mare before it was Mare, give them an answer in the Hunger Games - a tradition from years ago, sending twenty-four children into an arena to fight to the death. With a few changes, King Harold decides that this is the best way to find an heir. Twenty-four go in, each wanting the crown. Only one can come out and rule the castle.

Every year, one male and one female trainee are chosen from dozens of hopefuls in District Two, all of which have trained for years for this opportunity: the opportunity to participate in the slaughter of twenty three other children. Tributes from all over Panem are being taken to the Capitol for the 78th Annual Hunger Games - a normal Games, or so the tributes think. As soon as they arrive in the Capitol, though, before they are even brought to their rooms, they are wheeled into a small room. They are alone. Except for a camera, and a piece of paper telling them to explain their fondest memory, and their worst. As soon as they finish, they are wheeled to another room, this one filled with people and machinery and medicine. Here, a new experimental program, Tabula Rasa, will be performed on them. All their memories will be taken from them. Except for the two they just described Welcome to Panem, and welcome to Writer Games: Amnesia.
