Adley Derrin is the town of Gallora's best archer, so of course, his son is expected to be just as talented. But when his son fails the most prestigious archery competition in Gallora, his reputation sinks, his wife leaves him, and his self-confidence vanishes. All he wants in life is to be recognized, and to prove his ex-wife (along with the rest of the town) wrong that he can achieve something in life. Through proving himself to be more than others think of him, he will gain the respect of others and, most importantly, himself.

I dashed to the cliff edge, photo album in hand. Without thinking, I threw it off the cliff. Tears blurred my vision as I dropped to the ground. "Why...?" My voice was shaky and I felt weak. But it was for the best. I was starting a new life, a better one. A truck skidded to a halt behind me, creating a cloud of dust around. I slowly got to my feet, and took a small step backwards. I looked back at it, and felt a hot tear roll down my cheek and fall onto the shallow, gray dirt. I faced the sunset. The symbol of death. I could hear a familiar voice calling me, and I glanced back. I quickly removed my gaze from them. I bent my legs and... jumped.

In the utopian (or so it seems) city of Oak Ridge, hundreds of children are born every year, in a large building called The Facility. Only twenty-five of those children are selected. The 'unsatisfactory' children are cared for by The Facility's workers, where they will become workers themselves, to create new generations of children. The lucky twenty-five will be taken away, and sent to civilian families in Oak Ridge. The babies are chosen only if they are deemed 'perfect.' They are chosen by their qualities of health, quietness, and their ability to learn quickly. The babies will be taught, and raised by their new families. When they are old enough, they will recieve children, and have families of their own. Em is one of those twenty-five. She was the last-born baby of her year. And she will rebel. She will change their world forever.
