Even the most uneducated can have a mind for adventure - especially when it comes to saving the world. A man with a tie is discovered outside the limits of a dried-up settlement in the middle of nowhere, bearing a plague that was long thought to be contained behind the walls of Ban-Ken. When Master Drew Hughes discovers that the man intends to spread the disease beyond the great city, it is up to the private alcoholic and a loud-mouthed orphan, Alyn Smythy, to brave the city's walls and put a stop to the man-made plague before its power falls into the wrong hands. Book one of two. [BOUND FOR EXTENSIVE REWRITES IN NOVEMBER!] If you are triggered by suicide mentions, probably about three suggestions of it crop up total in this book. GRAPHICS AND ART DETAILS: Font in chapter banners: https://www.dafont.com/queen.font Fonts in cover image: https://www.dafont.com/queen.font and https://www.dafont.com/the-circus-show.font Art in both is by me; though some of the black silhouettes in the banner (skeleton, horse, wagon, two trash piles) are vectors from the net. Currently in the process of being published! The half-dwarf daughter of a human king, Branwen struggles to find her place in a world that sees hybrids as abominations. She's smart, kind, and gifted with magic, but to her father, she's nothing more than a mistake. When an allied land unexpectedly declares war, experimenting with dark magic seems the best way to save Branwen's kingdom and gain her father's approval--but she'll have to compromise her morals to do it. As she delves deeper into the practice of dark magic, the line between right and wrong begins to blur, leaving her to wonder if the ends really do justify the means.

[Watty's 2018 shortlist] Adelyn's quick hands and knack for thievery had a bad habit of putting her in dangerous situations, but forcing her into the path of Nikolai Kors was the worst of them all. A pirate captain with years of death and destruction under his belt, Nikolai has spent ages searching for the one thing that could make every loss, gamble and lie worth it, and Adelyn is the one person who knows where it is. But when fate strikes, it's revealed that Adelyn is more than just a common thief that stole a watch: she's the second piece to the puzzle Nik has been desperate to solve. Together, Nikolai and Adelyn must venture the seven seas and battle monsters of every kind. Should they succeed, Adelyn would have enough money to buy herself out of the life of thievery she's been living for years, but Nikolai hasn't been entirely honest with her... because there's a whole lot more than just riches at the end of this game.

More than anything, Grae Winters wants to live an average, boring life. No surprises, no magic, and definitely no vampires. Unfortunately for Grae, she's anything but normal. Cursed with a power she doesn't understand, pretending to be ordinary is difficult when living in a city of the bizarre and supernatural. Grae's life only gets weirder when vampires start disappearing off Roccia Nera's streets, and she's coerced into searching for a master vampire's missing daughter. If Grae fails to find her, she'll have to take the woman's place in the master's cadre...for eternity. In a city where normalcy is overrated, Grae's life is about to get much stranger.
