Tom and Ellie are a couple. They have been since 7th grade. Now that they're seniors, Ellie think they are mature enough to have a Pre-Valentine's Day double date with another couple at Pine Lake High. But Tom and Ellie wait over an hour at Forest Pizza, but the other couple never shows up. They go look for them, and eventually find them in Pine Lake Park... frozen in a puddle, dead as a doornail. On the ice is a note: "YOU'RE NEXT." Suddenly, Tom and Ellie are in a nightmare of jealousy, murder, double-crossing, and sabotage. Or, in Pine Lake, just another Valentine's Day.

Beth and her brother Eddie used to live in Chicago with their dad, the famous mystery writer Ted Cantianni. But after their dad decides he doesn't feel safe there, they packed up and moved to the town of Pine Lake, New Hampshire. They bought a nice cabin a few blocks from the lake. Ted is writing a new book, and Eddie and Beth have new friends. But they don't know their seemingly perfect little cabin used to be home to a murderer. ...And he wants it back.
