Mackenzie Russo is your average laid back teen. She is going to her first day of college, when her dorm room arrangement gets screwed up. She is matched up to room with Harry Styles, typical popular frat boy, and all hell breaks loose.

“There are three types of people,” he murmurs while gazing at her. “Those who come face to face with death unintentionally, ones who don’t have any control over it, and ones that greet it with open arms blatantly, which is you, darling. And it’s a pity,” He crouches down in front of her and his filthy hands rest on her knees. “I’ll give you two options to choose from,” he says before faintly smiling. “You can either be the one to die or you can be the one to kill.”

You know that moment, when you stare at that multiple choice question on your test, and you think, this couldn't be easier, they aren't too smart for putting these. So you read the question and immediately choose an answer and you move on. But then you finish your test, with time to spare, so you go back and reread your questions and you come back to that multiple choice question and you start to doubt it. That circle just did not look right around that letter, so you erase your answer and read the question again. You start to think of ways to cancel a few answers out. But you start to struggle when suddenly every answer seems right, or they all seem wrong and you start to think that this multiple choice question isn't so easy after all. You want there to be no right or wrong answer. So... You just follow your gut and circle what you think is the right answer and hope for the best.

There's three things you should know about Harry: 1. When we were in ninth grade his biggest aspiration in life was to start a punk ukulele band. 2. Once I made him a bracelet with plastic beads that didn't have a pattern in the slightest, and he wore it for years until the pink string holding it together couldn't take any more wear and tear. 3. He's been my neighbor for more than half my life, and that hasn't changed now that we're in college. There's three things you should know about me: 1. I'm banned from the putt putt golf course in my hometown... but that's actually Harry's fault. 2. I'm not a fan of math, but I'm good at it, which has turned into a constant battle in my head. 3. I'm not about to fall in love with my best friend. I'm not.

Elle Grey doesn't need anyone. She only needs herself, a paintbrush, and if she gets desperate enough, there are the few people she actually tolerates that she can talk to. She knows that there's more out there in the world - in fact, she spends most of her time either daydreaming or painting about it. She knows that the South Dakotan town she's grown up in is only suffocating her. That's why she finds Harry so intriguing. He's different and he brings out something in her that she wasn't sure was still there. Suddenly she's second-guessing everything she has known her entire life - maybe she does need someone.
