Gunther Schneider isn't expecting to feel much else other than glory and the pride of serving Nazi Germany when he is admitted into Hitler's prized SS. He believes himself unstoppable, a force to be reckoned with, unable to be brought down by the hands of man.
When he is transferred to the Chelmno Extermination Camp in Poland, he's in for a letdown when he finds he can't feel these emotions when surrounded by suffering and death, be it the suffering and death of the people he is told to despise.
He finds it harder still when a younger boy, Aleksander, begins to get under his skin, pulling at his heart and tearing away his front. Gunther knows what is done to people who feel these kinds of emotions for the same sex. He knows he faces the same fate as those who are loaded into the backs of gas vans, those that are never heard from again. But he can't rid himself of the feelings, and he doesn't know if he wants to.
Will he lay everything he worked for on the line for this boy? Or will he let Aleksander slip through his hands so he can save his own hide? Gunther has gotten himself into more than he bargained for, it seems.
