Haze McGee and Shadow Hawk thought they were finished with the Owner once and for all. They'd fulfilled their last "job," they were supposed to be done. But after their "failure" to complete all of their instructions, the Owner ropes them back into his world. Haze would always be his "soldier." That's how he'd been designed. "After this, you're free to leave," the Owner tells them. It was an offer they couldn't refuse. The job? Simple. Go to his lab and kill the last remaining test subject in the mysterious Sector R: Subject Z. Easy right? Wrong. What happens when their troubling pasts keep them from finishing their job? With the help of the mysterious Subject Z, Haze and Shadow are forced to flee the repercussions of their actions. A nasty chase ensues as the Owner sends a team of hit-men to kill his rogue "soldier" and finally finish the job he so desperately needed to end, before the runaways discovered the myriad lies and secrets he'd tried to keep hidden.

If you lived in the town of Clear Creek Valley, you'd know who I am, and you'd know who my family is. But in the slight chance that you don't, or have never even visited, I'm Oliver Harken Derry. I'm twenty now, but I was seventeen during the summer of 1993. That summer started out like normal: my parents went to visit the relatives, my older sister went on a secret road trip, I started a prank war with my eleven younger siblings... but then the crazy shit happened. Stuff, I'd never expected. I'd like to blame a lot of what happened on Penny Harris (one of my foster sisters), and her brothers, but it wasn't exactly ALL her fault. The circumstances just weren't on our side, apparently. We could've never expected any of it. As I'm finding out, my family is destined to be in the midst of trouble, at all times. Being a Harken... it doesn't mean anything to you. But it means a hell of a lot to me, and I'd do anything to protect that.

Saddled with the misfortune of having a boy's name and being raised by her rowdy college-age brother, notorious prankster, Tommy is anything but a normal eleven year old. After her brother dies, Tommy is left in the care of her brother's girlfriend and best friend, since no one else seemed capable of understanding her the way they do, including her own parents. Jack McMurphy is sick of his daughter's antics. So sick, in fact, that he refuses to tell even his closest friends about her. No, "My daughter did the cutest things today." Or, "My daughter got an A on her history exam." Or, "My daughter is quite the prankster, life is definitely more interesting when she's around." Jack is the type of uptight person Tommy can't help but cause trouble for; the two of them had been butting heads since she was in diapers. So after Tommy's pranks "ruin" her brother's funeral, and the mess involving her mother that quickly ensued, Jack finally decides enough is enough and gives Tommy an ultimatum she can't joke her way out of. It's either go to boarding school or stay out of trouble for an entire month. If she can do it, she'll be allowed to stay in her hometown of Black Ridge Canyon, if not, it's off to a boarding school in New York for her.

When her mother dies suddenly, Mira Beketov decides that it's finally time to runaway from her brutally abusive step-father. She defies her crippling phobia of moving vehicles to fly from New York to Colorado, to show up unannounced on the porch of her biological father, Arthur River. Mira never knew that leaving behind her life of crime, gangs and abuse in New York would ever result in what she found waiting for her in the place that was supposed to be her safe haven. Upon arriving, she discovers that she has a twin brother, Niko, who nobody had ever decided would be a good idea to tell her about. Along with the discovery of her brother, she finds a new family, a few angry Italian mobsters, a father who despises her, a couple of bloodthirsty psychopaths, a kid who will do anything to protect her, and a mess of lies, gangs, money, murder, a secret to which only Mira holds the key, and much more. The pressing question Mira and Niko find themselves asking each other is: Who is telling the truth and who is trying to fucking murder us? Who is trying to help? Who is going to get them killed? Is there even a fucking difference?
